Most commonly seen on dry land in the glow of a firefly, bioluminescence is actually far more common under the sea in many species of fungi, fish and other marine wildlife.
The answer to that is the same as the answer to the question of why some men wear so much darn cologne. To attract the ladies, of course! But far more successfully than the men with the cologne. There are more than 2, species of firefly. Hence baby fireflies are conceived. Another reason fireflies glow and this one not quite as romantic is to lure prey.
Some females will glow to lure a male to her and then — chomp! The final reason that fireflies glow is to deter predators. Fireflies are filled with chemicals called lucibufagins, which is hard to say and even harder to swallow — they taste terrible. When a predator tastes a firefly, it learns to associate the glow with the bad taste. There you have it, folks.
Then again, that makes it kind of magical, right? Check out the video below of fireflies —accompanied by cricket song — in a soybean field.
Whether you enjoy dinner in the backyard or get a bonfire going, you preferably do so in the company of familiar glowing insects: fireflies.
Also known as lightning bugs, fireflies are part of the Lampyridae family meaning they are actually winged beetles and tend to make an appearance in backyards, fields, and forests every year between the end of May and the beginning of June because they thrive in grassy, humid climates. More than 2, species of fireflies can be found around the world, with about existing in North America, per Firefly Research and Conservation FRC , a nonprofit organization founded by firefly researcher Ben Pfeiffer.
Two chemicals found in their bodies, luciferin and luciferase, spur a reaction in the presence of oxygen, adenosine triphosphate ATP, which is found in all living things , and other compounds. Luciferin is heat resistant, while luciferase a bioluminescent enzyme spurs the emission of light , Harrison explains. Depending on the species, a male or female firefly can create light for a number of purposes.
First, it comes in handy during mating season, according to the National Park Service. Typically, the male will fly around sending light signals to a group of females seeking out the right partner, and each species has its own unique flash patterns. Once the female finds a male up to her standards—say, depending on how often he lights up and the intensity of the flash—she emits her own light and the rest is history, Harrison says. If a population of blue ghosts is destroyed by logging or other disruption, there will be no reestablishment.
Habitat destruction is therefore one of the greatest threats to fireflies. Other hazards include light pollution from artificial lights and perhaps insecticide applications for mosquito control. There is much yet to learn about fireflies.
Entomologists like me have identified about or so species in North America , but it is clear that many more species occur here. Pay attention to the fireflies in your neighborhood; observe their flash patterns and behavior.

One summer was particularly bad with gypsy moths and the township decided to spray for the moth since many trees were decimated by the moth.
The unfortunate byproduct to spraying for the gypsy moth was an end to the summer night spectacular brought on by the lighting bugs since their numbers were eliminated down to only a handful. Sometimes I think we should let nature run its course. Clyde Sorenson , North Carolina State University You might not really be sure you saw what you think you saw when the first one shows up. Bioluminescent beetles Fireflies produce light in special organs in their abdomens by combining a chemical called luciferin, enzymes called luciferases, oxygen and the fuel for cellular work, ATP.
