Nikon provides a nice guide here. Sometimes the body itself is out of adjustment. This is a common problem on the D You may need to return the camera to Nikon or take it to a repair shop to get the body focus adjusted. There is a small knob in the top right corner of the viewfinder. You may need to adjust this to make the image clear. Check if the flash pops up manually by hitting the flash button on the left side.
If the flash does pop up, then it is an issue with the settings you are using. If it appears that the flash is not popping up all the way, gently pull it up as the mechanism could be sticky. My flash flashes but does not appear on the picture. No matter which settings. Front, rear, slow sync, plusorminus. Seems like the Synchronisation with the shutter does not work. I've had my D for almost 2 years and I just had this happen today for the first time.
It doesn't work when I hit the left button and randomly the up button. Earlier today I did a "clean image sensor" on the menu which I have never done before but I'm wondering if I did it wrong and messed something up. I am now having the same problem - left button not working. Anyone know how to resolve it as it is a pain, I know you can get around the problem by setting the command dials to scroll thru menus and pictures but this isn't really a satisfactory solution..

You'll probably be charged a diagnostic fee. But since the body is still under warranty Nikon will probably fix it for free. Unless the body was subject to "excessive moisture".
As in you were using the camera in a down poor or the camera got allot of water or something splashed or spilled on it. The multi selector is connected to the board using a flat ribbon film style wiring with crimp style connectors. Mine has come undone a couple of times and had to remove backplate and reconnect it.
I put a nice sticky piece of tape to hold it in place last time i fixed it. If the previous suggestions don't work, have you tried a different lens. The problem is just as likely being caused by the lens rather than the camera! Mine has done that on occasions too With the kit lens taking it of and replacing it did the job. Finaly using the live view seemed to "knockit "into action. Try that. Try that But it shouldn't act that way. One shouldn't "live" with that. BirgerH, Thank you!

Or Remote is another possibility, turn that off. Try the standard Single Frame choice. I know you mentioned the lens, but a manual lens is not a factor on my Nikon. Sign up to join this community.
