If the Gumpos are in an exposed location out in the wind, or away from the protection of a building, perhaps winter cold has been affecting the blooms. I doubt this would be the case, however, because we have had several very mild winters recently, but it is possible because they are actually less hardy than the Hershey Reds -- some authorities rate the Gumpo only to the zero to 10 degree range or zone 7.

Yet another factor can be shade, if the location is too shaded they may not bloom as heavily as they would in more light. Again, though, if they are in the same location as the others, I would not expect the light to be a factor. This leads me to wonder about pruning. If you tend to tidy up the plants each spring or summer, you would want to take into consideration that the Gumpos bloom quite a bit later -- by weeks -- than the Hershey Reds.

In the United States, the Satsuki azaleas have never been as popular as the early spring bloomers because the flowers are produced after the spring flush of growth, not before as in the Tsutsuji group.

This means that the large flowers are partially hidden in the foliage, playing peek-a-boo when they finally appear. But, in Japan, the Satsuki azaleas have always been more popular, primarily because their traditional garden style relies on form and inference, with little emphasis on gaudy displays of color like we decadent Westerners enjoy.

The azaleas are closely sheared, often to simulate rock outcrops. Obviously, a bunch of flowers on your simulated rocks would ruin the illusion. The Satsuki azaleas are also traditionally used for bonsai work.

It is right in the middle of all the rest of them. It looks very healthy and continues to put out plenty of new leaves. I didn't prune it last year since it is still small enough it doesn't need it. Just curious if maybe it isn't one that blooms in April??

I do not have one but I thought it was a late spring bloomer. Maybe someone can confirm. Do you not remember what it did last year or is it a new shrub in your garden? Gumpo azaleas are among the Satsuki azaleas which are the late blooming Japanese azaleas.

They are also highly variable, so the Pink Gumpo is a selection of a pink sport of the Gumpo azaleas. There is no guarantee that it won't vary in time. I don't raise Gumpo azaleas, but they are listed as Late bloomers, meaning that they would bloom in June here in PA. I don't know how that would translate to Dallas. They are also listed as not blooming well in Atlanta, GA, due to heat and drought. I would imagine that Dallas may be hotter and dryer than Atlanta. So here they seldom ever bloom unless they are enclosed in a deer fence or otherwise protected.
