Pros Lots of highly paid OT available, easy schedules, great team work. When I first started this job, I thought it was going to be a great federal agency to work for. I quickly realized that the only reason most officers stick around is because it pays well.
The work environment is toxic and most managers are poorly qualified. I recommend this job if you want to use this as a stepping stone for another agency, or if you a money hungry. Pros Good money. Cons Almost everything. Yes There are 9 helpful reviews 9 No. Worked for Chief Counsel's office.
Ideal job for a lawyer. Excellent organizational structure; management is highly qualified. Perfect office culture. Yes No There are 1 unhelpful reviews 1. The job is a very rewarding experience with the immigration casework and drug seizures. However, you will most likely start your career out in a very undesirable location and transferring out of that location is almost impossible.
You are a body in this agency and that is all. Use this agency as a stepping stone to get something better unless you are from a border town or get lucky in the hiring process. Pros Amazing Pay and Awesome Experiences. Cons Very difficult to transfer. Yes There are 17 helpful reviews 17 No. Care to share?
Help people considering your employer. Share your experience. Only reason to work here is because it is easy, it pays a lot and there is job security. The mission, the support, the management, and the job are terrible. The job is too controversial. The agency provides no support for agents. Pros Good pay and benefits. Cons Everything else.
Yes There are 25 helpful reviews 25 No. The money is decent, as well as the benefits, and retirement. If that's all you want out of life then CBP is for you Management has very little knowledge on how to manage people and know very little about their job.
Most in management are there for politically correct reasons or because they know someone. Officers seem to be hostile towards on another due to the culture created by CBP which dog eat dog. Many Officers from the top ranks on down the line only have a high school diploma and have a high school mentality to match.
In CBP you are a pawn to be used at their discretion. The union is there more for a show piece then to actually do anything for you. Most people get by, by keeping a low profile, doing the bare minimum and then going home at the end of their shift. Pros the money. Cons everything else. Not a lot of opportunity for advancement unless you wanted to relocate across the country.
Occasionally had to travel a lot during the duty day miles or more. Pros Very busy, made the day pass really fast. Cons Management was not always responsive. Yes There are 4 helpful reviews 4 No. There are many opportunities for various training, to transfer locations and work temporary assignments. I learned a lot throughout my 25 year career with the agency and enjoyed my various work assignments.
What I did not learn to do was to network and be a "yes" person. The workplace culture appears to be if you like to network and hang out with the managers you seem to be selected for opportunities. There is a prevalence for nepotism that will not go away. It made it difficult for the two agencies to learn the other agency's laws and procedures. I believe the new CBP officers can do the job better without that conflict.
Pros Overtime Pay. Healthcare and retirement benefits. Cons Quality of life Yes There are 5 helpful reviews 5 No. Do not start your career on the southern border!!!! Quitting my job and joining CBP most days feels like the worst decision of my life. I've served in and the military, previously worked for the sheriff department, and contract security. Pros Decent pay for very easy work and many different opportunities.
Cons Micro management from staff, very poor team work, and too many other things to list. Yes There are 8 helpful reviews 8 No There are 2 unhelpful reviews 2. Jobs at U. Customs and Border Protection. Border Patrol Agent GL Starting during the pandemic was stressful. Not working 5 days in the office, not getting training from staff, doing 7 days of work in 2 days and being treated poorly. Pros Benefits. Cons Insurance. Yes There are 7 helpful reviews 7 No. You feel an important part of something.
It was an honor to help protect this great nation. The work was fast-paced, and he environments were kept very current. It was very fast paced, and could be stressful. Pros top-notch talent. Cons can be a stressful environment. Yes There are 1 helpful reviews 1 No. Law enforcement culture that hops between crises.
Huge organization so mileage may vary. It's fairly large and tends to manage by crisis. Usually when one problem is solved, another one becomes the focus even if it's not necessarily a problem. There's a tendency to reward expediency over process and people who can do things efficiently tend to not get reprimanded for poor or bullying behavior.
That said, it's a large organization and your experience will wildly vary depending on if you work in DC or outside of the DMV area, who your boss is, and your organization within CBP. Some places are great and filled with opportunities, others are churn and burn. Pros Interesting Mission, Work can be high profile. Yes There are 2 helpful reviews 2 No There are 1 unhelpful reviews 1. If you take this job you will be a number in a spreadsheet to management, and unless you make friends in management will be stuck with the "subpar" tasks and assignments.
The training you receive is inadequate to cover the wide range of circumstances encountered in the job, and a large portions of it is not applicable depending on if you are assigned to a land border or airport.
There is frequent unexpected overtime, which can often be double shifts with as little as an hour notice. Especially towards the end of the fiscal year, where management will start forcing all employees to do back to back overtime to pad out the overtime budget for the upcoming year. You will have no life outside of work, so if you end up taking this job, make sure to go into it with an exit strategy in mind. Yes There are 11 helpful reviews 11 No. Additional Information.
