As the anniversary of his death comes around again — is this really how we want to remember him? Is this how we preserve him in history, as a tragic young man and a member of the fabled 27 Club? It is important to acknowledge the tragedy of his suicide and to understand that Cobain was a troubled man. He suffered from depression and addiction. His life was oftentimes difficult.
It is more important to instead remember how Kurt Cobain lived, rather than how he died. His legacy is first and foremost the music he made with Nirvana, that to this day still has the ability to inspire and empower. For some, it is the gateway to a love of rock music that lasts a lifetime. That takes talent. Something we should also acknowledge when we talk about Kurt Cobain is his political progressiveness. Nirvana also pushed the grunge genre forward more than any other band.
None, however, have been as ambitious in their homage as Deer Tick. Ahead of a South By Southwest showcase in , instead of playing a traditional set, John McCauley and his bandmates performed an entire set of Nirvana songs. Cobain was a fan of female bands from smaller scenes, often way ahead of the music industry curve.
The Breeders and the riot grrrls all have a hand in it. It was also something McCauley pointed to when explaining how Nirvana impacted Deer Tick beyond their sound.
I think Kurt Cobain was a great role model in that way. At the time, as RuPaul shot to fame, not many saw the drag queen as the tour de force that she would become. While in Europe, Cobain took time out to spend with Love and daughter Frances, but while at his hotel in Rome, Italy, he purposely overdosed on drugs and fell into a coma. Love found him, and he was immediately taken to the hospital. When he returned to the States, Cobain's psychological state worsened. On March 18, , Love called authorities because Cobain had taken medication and locked himself in a closet with guns.
When the police arrived, they determined he was not suicidal, but as a safety precaution, confiscated the medication and firearms. Shortly after, Love pleaded with Cobain to get clean, which she was trying to do herself. He checked into a rehab clinic in L. On April 5, , in the guest house behind his Seattle home, a year-old Cobain committed suicide.
He placed a shotgun into his mouth and fired, killing himself instantly. He left a lengthy suicide note in which he addressed his many fans as well as his wife and young daughter. While his death was officially ruled as a suicide, conspiracy theories have circulated that Love may have had something to do with his death.
