Why is butter paleo

Butter has been around for years, we are talking well into the BCE era. Does that surprise you? But do you even know what butter is? Most of us have had butter at some point in our lives.

If not though, butter is the separation of fat from buttermilk. You can make butter by churning fresh milk or certain types of cream. It was easily stored for long periods of time and used as a condiment much like it is today. An interesting fact about store-bought butter is that some commercial vendors add coloring to their butter in the forms of carotene and annatto coloring to get a slightly yellow appearance.

Is butter Paleo? Sort of. Butter contains milk solids, which indeed are not Paleo. Not to mention ghee stays stable at high heat making it great for cooking. What is ghee? It is basically pure butterfat, butter that has been rendered down until the lactose and dairy proteins have been removed. Is Butter Primal? Is Butter part of the primal diet? Is Butter part of the primal diet.

Before you run out and grab some Country Crock, let me clarify — not all butter is created equal. When referring to butter, we mean grass-fed butter. Butter that comes from cows that have been humanely raised — eating grass and roaming around a pasture like cows are meant to do. This part is a vital piece of the puzzle…healthy cows produce health-promoting butter. Unhealthy cows do not. Also, never forget you vote with your dollar. Support farmers that treat their cows humanely , and seek out only grass-fed or pastured butter.

Like I said earlier, our main goal with the Paleo diet is to improve our health — not to put a label on how we eat OR police the way other people eat. Butter has many beneficial components. One of them being short and medium-chain fatty acids. These types of fatty acids are easily digested by the body and used as energy quickly.

You may have seen many Paleo followers touting the benefits of butter or Bulletproof coffee. The short and medium-chain fatty acids. Specifically grass fed butter, is rich in this fatty acid which is a naturally produced trans fat. The beauty of this trans fat is that because it is natural it is actually good for us. Some studies in mice have showed that CLA potentially helps with weight loss but studies in humans have shown mixed results. Some studies have show significant weight loss in humans 6 , whilst others show no effect at all 7.

Finally this meta analysis found that the overall verdict is that CLA can cause modest fat loss. A final benefit to discuss is the simplicity of having yet another healthy, filling and delicious fat option to add to your diet. It is great to cook with as it is mostly a saturated fat which makes it stable for cooking at high temperatures.

Yes, technically butter is not Paleo if we are to follow all the rules that were originally set out for us.
